about

'Wellerman' was all set to be part of our first album, a collection of lesser known New Zealand folk music when the song suddenly gained worldwide fame due to a performance on Tik Tok during the 2020 pandemic. We felt that, even though our version had been recorded over a year earlier, it didn't seem to fit the bill any more so we removed it from the album and have placed it here instead for free to anyone who may enjoy it.......

In 1830 an Englishman by the name of Joseph Weller arrived in Sydney and founded a maritime supply company. By the 1840s he had expanded into New Zealand and ran his ships out of Otakau and Tautuku. By keeping whaling fleets supplied with food, drink, fuel and other essentials, Wellers were able to keep ships at sea for far longer than would have normally been the case.

No evidence has ever been found to suggest that any of Weller's ships was named 'The Billy of Tea' so we can only conclude that this was some form of nickname or in joke.

Soon May the Wellerman Come is generally believed to be one of New Zealand's earliest complete English language folk song..
